Harrington Franklin Battery Storage Project
There has been a significant move to renewable energy generation in the past few years, with the UK producing over 50% of its energy from non-carbon sources (i.e., renewables and nuclear). Whilst there has been rapid deployment of renewables development in the way electricity is generated, there is also the need to ensure that the supporting infrastructure is in place so that the electricity generated can be suitably distributed into the national grid.
Harrington Franklin battery storage facility is located within Richborough Energy Park near Sandwich, in Kent. It is proposed to store electricity prior to being released to the grid during peak time requirements at the Richborough Substation.
The facility was granted consent by Dover District Council and Thanet District Council in December 2022. In December 2023, EDP Renewables acquired Harrington Franklin Limited from Tupa Energy and took over the responsibility of developing the design further, including overseeing its construction, owning the asset and managing the operations.
In March 2024, an application to amend the layout to accommodate the required equipment to allow the battery storage to connect to the national grid was submitted. The application was also submitted with information to satisfy pre-commencement planning conditions.
EDPR has awarded HVSS as the Principal Contractor to build the project. HVSS is one of the UK’s leading ICP’s in delivering and managing utilities connection. Construction works are scheduled to commence in Q4 of 2024 and finished in Q4 2025.
